Nearly 100 killed in deadly landslide in Myanmar

Myanmar Landslide
November 2015 – MYANMAR – Nearly 100 bodies have been pulled from a landslide near a jade mine in Myanmar’s northern Kachin State and an estimated 100 people are still missing, a rescue official said on Sunday. The landslide happened in the early hours of Saturday in Hpakant, an area that produces some of the world’s highest-quality jade, but the mines and dump sites for debris are rife with hazards and landslides are not uncommon, though rarely this deadly. Workers, many of them migrants from other parts of the country, toil long hours for little pay. The state-run Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper said that many of the miners were sleeping in huts when the landslide occurred.
An official with the Hpakant Township Fire Brigade told Reuters by telephone that 99 bodies had been recovered by late Sunday afternoon and that this number was likely to rise. “We are sure the death toll will go up since many are still missing,” he said. The official, who asked not to be named because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said that the accident occurred near a mining site controlled by Triple One Jade Mining at around 3 a.m. on Saturday. It was unclear as to what triggered the landslide in the remote and mountainous region that is almost entirely off limits to foreigners. A lawmaker also confirmed the figure. Zaw Htay, a senior official from the President’s Office, said that rescue efforts were being carried out by local authorities.
“Responsible officials from Kachin State government are taking care of rescue and relief works,” he said. Myanmar’s jade industry is extremely opaque and much of the jade that is mined in Hpakant is believed to be smuggled to neighboring China where the stone is highly valued. According to researchers from environmental advocacy group Global Witness, which published a comprehensive report on the sector earlier this year, the value of jade production in Myanmar is estimated to have been as much as US$31 billion in 2014. Many of the jade mines are connected to government officials, members of armed ethnic groups and cronies with close ties to the former military government, the group found. Safety measures at the mines and surrounding dumping sites are minimal. “These crony-owned mining companies piled this giant mine dump near the village without any consideration for the safety of the village that has existed all along,” the fire official said. –Reuters

4.7 magnitude Oklahoma earthquake felt by residents in Texas and Kansas

Oklahoma Quake Graphic
November 2015 – OKLAHOMA – A 4.7 magnitude quake struck near Cherokee, Oklahoma around 1:42 a.m. The area is not prone to large earthquakes, but residents have experienced several quakes of similar strength in 2015, according to Randy Baldwin from the National natural disaster Information Center. But there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. A number of factors could affect how the public felt it, said Rex Buchanan, director of the Kansas Geological Survey, and a growing expert on earthquakes in Kansas. It was quickly followed by two tremors, a 3.1 and a 3.9, in the same area.
Oklahoma now has more earthquakes than anywhere else in the world, a spokesperson from the Oklahoma Corporation Commission reported. The earthquake was felt in Kansas and Texas. Geologists as well as state officials have positively linked high-volume wastewater injection wells to Oklahoma’s recent rise in quake activity. The USGS also recorded five more quakes in Oklahoma on Friday all rating between a 2.6 and 3.5 on Friday, including one about 13 minutes after the 4.7 quake.
The USGS has not reported any significant aftershocks since the quake hit. Still, thousands of disposal wells in both states are still in operation, which suggests that the constant seismic activity is far from over. Thousands of people took to social media, reporting the occurrence on Twitter and Facebook, describing it as a frightening experience. –News Telegraph

Medical officials in Liberia monitor 153 people after Ebola re-emerges

Liberia
November 2015 – LIBERIA – Liberia has placed 153 people under surveillance for Ebola after three new cases emerged in the West African nation this past week, months after it had twice before been declared free of the disease. World Health Organizations (WHO) investigators were working to unlock the mystery of how a new cluster of cases emerged in Monrovia because there was no evidence yet of the usual factors, such as contact with a person suffering from Ebola, handling remains of an Ebola victim or traveling to a region where the virus is prevalent, said Margaret Harris, a spokeswoman for WHO.
There are currently no known cases in two neighboring countries that, like Liberia, have been devastated by Ebola for nearly two years. Sierra Leone was declared free of the disease earlier this month. A week ago, the last known patient with Ebola in Guinea, a 3-week-old girl, was found to have recovered. Forty-two days must pass without a new case of Ebola before a country can be declared free of the disease. More than 11,300 people have died since the virus first emerged in December of 2013.
“What we are investigating is whether there has been contact with body fluids of someone with persistent virus,” Harris said, referring to a person who has recovered from the disease but still harbors the virus in some part of the body. The Ebola virus has been detected in semen and earlier this year, an American doctor who contracted the disease while working in a hospital in Sierra Leone and then later recovered was found to have the virus still present in one of his eyes.
The new cluster of cases in Liberia emerged in a suburb of the capital city of Monrovia. A 10-year-old boy was diagnosed and then the boy’s father and brother tested positive for Ebola, according to Reuters. All three are being treated at a clinic in Monrovia. Liberia has twice before been declared Ebola free, on May 9 and then again on Sept. 3. In between, six new cases were uncovered. Two of those patients died. –USA Today

At least 15 reportedly feared dead after dam bursts at Brazil mine

Brazil Flood
November 2015 – BRAZIL – The rescue mission continued through the night, including with the help of specially-trained sniffer dogs teams; the crews’ work was, however, been hampered by heavy rain and poor cellular reception, a civil defense spokesperson in Mariana told Mashable. “We would like to express our solidarity to all affected by this accident at Samarco’s tailings dams in the state of Minas Gerais,” said Murilo Ferreira, CEO and president of Vale. The thick red mud surge engulfed cars and lorries, and destroyed homes. Vale, the world’s biggest iron-ore producer, and BHP, the largest mining company, each own a 50 percent stake in Belo Horizonte-based Samarco.
Besides leveling everything in its path, the avalanche caused “enormous environmental damage,” an investigator with the Minas Gerais state prosecutor’s office, Carlos Ferreira Pinto, said. The dam released nearly 60 million cubic metres of ochre sludge and mining waste. The cause of the burst, Samarco said, is still unknown. The flood felt like an earthquake as it rushed through Bento Rodrigues, said Andrew Oliveira, who was working there at the time, in an interview with Globo TV.
The burst leads to devastating the nearby town with mudslides located about 300 kilometers (185 miles) from Rio de Janeiro it destroyed hundreds of homes in a nearby village on Thursday. Residents living in an area downhill from the dam were told to evacuate to higher ground. Though finding survivors is growing less likely, officials said they did not rule it out. The mayor of Mariana, the nearest city in the state of Minas Gerais, said his town’s official toll now stands at one dead and 12 missing, all of them mine workers – revising an earlier toll of 13 missing. A few deaths have been reported and dozens are said to be injured.
Analysts at Clarksons Platou Securities said on Friday that the likelihood of a lengthy stoppage at the Germano mine, which accounts for about one-fifth of seaborne pellet market, could lift iron ore prices. Samarco says the waste is inert and consists mostly of silica (sand) from the iron ore processing and presents “no chemical that is harmful to health.” Ricardo Vescovi also insisted Brazilian law does not require any emergency alarm for dam failures and that the authorities had approved the company’s emergency response plan.
Resident Joaquim Teofilo Dutra said a loud noise was the first sign residents had that something was wrong. “When I went outside, there were already people running uphill saying the dam burst,” recalled resident Joaquim Dutra. –News Telegraph
