- Thursday morning, at 5:39 local time, a 4.4 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Dead Sea region of Israel, an area that is the deepest depression on the face of the planet. Though there were no reports of injury or damage in Israel or neighboring Jordan, it is certainly worth considering the meaning of the event, especially in light of other recent earthquakes that have hit Israel and the catastrophic earthquake that hit a struck Nepal a few months ago. Biblical scholars explain that…

ISIS IN AFGHANISTAN: PROXY WAR AGAINST IRAN AND CHINA
The nature of the war in Afghanistan has shifted dramatically in recent months. While the US and NATO continue to be actively involved in the country – their strategic objectives having changed very little since the Bush administration launched the war nearly a decade and a half ago – the complexion of the battlefield, and the parties actively engaged in the war, has changed significantly.

SCIENTISTS WARN ‘SUPERCHARGED’ GMOS COULD BE USED AS BIO-WEAPONS
The “gene drive” technology allows GMOs to spread rapidly in the wild. The fear is that these organisms could fall into the wrong hands or accidentally spark a catastrophe. The technology is being touted as a way to revolutionize medicine and agriculture, and supporters say it could, in theory, halt the spread of mosquito-borne diseases like malaria and yellow fever, and eliminate crop pests and invasive species like rats and can toads. But many scientists are warning that people with nefarious intentions or fumbling handlers could release the gene-drive technology from the lab and harm the environment and human health. It even has the potential to be used by terrorists as a bio-weapon directed against people or livestock because the genes – which are capable of spreading like a virus – will be cheap and easy to produce.

DRAMATIC FOOTAGE OF SAUDI TANKS INVADING YEMEN
In any event, we suppose the real question is whether Iran is willing to stand by and watch as the Houthis are dismantled by Saudi Arabia, or whether Tehran decides it's time to provide more than just "logistical support", at which point Yemen's proxy "conflict" will officially morph into a regional sectarian war. There are competing accounts as to exactly what happened at the Al Anad airbase in Yemen on Monday, where Saudi-backed forces loyal to President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi reportedly routed Houthi rebels, marking the latest in a series of setbacks for the Iran-backed group which forced Hadi to flee to Riyadh earlier this year, plunging Yemen into a bloody civil war.

PRIVATIZED, FOR-PROFIT IMMIGRATION DETENTION CENTERS FORCE DETAINEES TO WORK FOR $1-3/DAY
"We have a name for locking people up and forcing them to do real work without wages. It's called slavery." So says Carl Takei, a staff attorney with the ACLU National Prison Project, speaking of the privately run detention centers for undocumented immigrants who're facing deportation. These centers are not meant to be punitive, and many of the people in them will have their immigration claims upheld.

ARMY HAS PLANS FOR REAL, LIVE KILLER ROBOT SWARMS
Leading scientists including Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk, and Steve Wozniak penned an open letter last week demanding a ban on autonomous weapons (i.e. killer robots). If the smartest minds of our time are demanding this, shouldn’t we think about it? On top of that, new information has come forward that the military is planning to have killer robots that act in swarms by 2050. They would be devoid of human oversight and act as judge, jury, and execution. This video by RedactedTonight puts a little comedy into the subject – but that doesn’t mean this is a joke!

Wildfires rage across California – 60,000 acres burn, more than 13,000 evacuated
August 2015 – CALIFORNIA – Thousands of people were ordered out of their homes Monday after wind-whipped wildfires burned dozens of buildings across northern California. Described as “unprecedented” by authorities, the largest blaze — which is known as the Rocky Fire — had torn across Lake County, north of San Francisco, growing to almost 60,000 acres, or 93 square miles, by Monday afternoon, CalFire spokesman Officer Daniel Berlant said. Describing the fire as “erratic” and “destructive,” Berlant said that “it is burning in whatever direction it wants to.” At one point on Monday afternoon, the fire even jumped the highway along its northern border.
Even so, the nearly 3,000 firefighters who are battling the blaze have made some progress, Berlant added, increasing the fire containment area from five percent o to 12. The scale of the blaze has prompted officials to order 13,000 people to evacuate their homes, Berlant said, and several roads have been closed. The fire has already destroyed 24 homes and 26 outbuildings and was threatening 6,300 homes, officials said.
“A lot more firefight left on this fire,” Berlant said. “It’s not done yet.” Many of the California fires were sparked by lightning and the danger was expected to continue as the National Weather Service issued a Red Flag warning for Modoc County on Monday. A separate blaze the known as the Frog Fire continues to burn in that area. Officials urge “extreme caution” during Red Flag warnings “because a simple spark can cause a major wildfire.” –NBC News
Dangerous: Super Typhoon Soudelor intensifies as the strongest storm of 2015, wind gusts 220 mph
August 2015 – TAIWAN – Soudelor is intensifying rapidly over the western Pacific Ocean after raking through Saipan, a U.S. commonwealth in the Northern Mariana Islands, Sunday night and early Monday. Super Typhoon Soudelor became the fifth super typhoon of this year Monday after undergoing a replacement of its eyewall, a process which occurs in all intense tropical cyclones. A super typhoon is defined by sustained wind speeds of at least 150 mph. According to Monday’s 5 p.m. EDT bulletin from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, Soudelor had strengthened into the equivalent of a Category 5 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 180 mph (one-minute average) with gusts to 220 mph.
Soudelor has maintained its strength and as of 11 p.m. EDT Monday, Soudelor continues to have maximum sustained winds of 180 mph and some additional strengthening is possible. Low wind shear and very warm sea surface temperatures have allowed Soudelor to ramp up quickly; the cyclone was just a minimal typhoon 36 hours earlier. Soudelor continues to track to the west-northwest over the open waters of the Western Pacific. Soudelor has become the strongest tropical cyclone seen anywhere on Earth so far in 2015, at least by JTWC satellite estimation. Cyclone Pam in March reached peak estimated sustained winds of about 165 mph (145 knots) in the South Pacific basin. On this path, Soudelor will move toward Japan’s southwestern Ryukyu islands by Friday.
For now, the main island of Okinawa (including Kadena Air Base) lies at the north end of the forecast swath, but it remains far too soon to rule out a closer pass of the center of Soudelor to Okinawa. Taiwan and China are also likely to be impacted by Soudelor this weekend. Even though it may be weakening by then, Soudelor could still be a very strong typhoon. Its center may pass directly over Taipei, the Taiwanese capital. Intensifying from a Category 1 to Category 2 equivalent storm, Soudelor’s eye passed directly over the Island of Saipan, home to about 48,000 residents. A state of disaster and significant emergency was declared by Acting Gov. Ralph DLG Torres.
High winds downed power poles, removed roofs off buildings and flooded Saipan’s power plant. About 350 people were in emergency shelters, as of Monday morning, the Pacific Daily News reported. “From looking at the damage, I would guess weeks to months to restore power. It took about three to six months to restore service on Guam after Pongsona,” Dr. Phillip Dauterman told the Pacific Daily News in an email. “This is not the total damage of Pongsona, but it is close.” Saipan International Airport recorded a peak wind gust to 91 mph just before 11 p.m. local time Sunday night, as the western eyewall approached, before wind observations dropped off — not to mention the instrumentation erroneously reported snow — for about an hour.
Soudelor passed north of Guam but wind gusts over 30 mph and light rain were measured. High surf from Soudelor will continue for the next few days. Soudelor, a name contributed by the Federated States of Micronesia, was a legendary chief on the island of Pohnpei, about 1,650 kilometers (1025 miles) east-southeast of Guam. –Weather
Catastrophic flooding claims 46 lives in Myanmar – thousands displaced
August 2015 – MYANMAR – The death toll from flooding in Myanmar has climbed to 46, with more than 200,000 people affected, the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement said Monday. The flooding has affected residents in 11 of Myanmar’s 14 states and divisions, the ministry said. In addition to the damage to housing and farmland, infrastructure has been badly hit, with roads and rail lines cut in many areas and telecommunication links broken. Myanmar has suffered heavy rains, winds and flooding since Cyclone Komen made landfall in Bangladesh on 30 July, causing landslides and damage in different parts of the country, according to United Nations agencies. “The floods are hitting children and families who are already very vulnerable, including those living in camps in Rakhine state,” said Shalini Bahuguna, from the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
There are 140,000 displaced children and families in Rakhine alone. “Beyond the immediate impact, the floods will have a longer term impact on the livelihoods of these families,” she warned. According to the Myanmar Government, 39 people have died and over 200,000 people across the country are in need of lifesaving assistance. Twelve out of Myanmar’s 14 states and regions have been affected by the rains. On 31 July, President U Thein Sein issued a statement declaring natural disaster zones in four regions, including Rakhine, where access is limited due to flooding, road blockages and landslides.
“Initial reports indicate that there is extensive damage to shelters and other infrastructure in camps around Sittwe [Rakhine’s capital], where some 100,000 displaced people are staying,” stressed the UN Office for the Coordination for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in an update from 30 July. Limited information is availablethis this stage on the situation in Magway region and Chin state. In one township alone in Magway, around 70 villages are reported to be affected by floods and people in the area being relocated to schools, monasteries and other safe locations. In Chin state, at least 100 houses reported have been destroyed by landslides, pointed out OCHA. Local authorities, the Government, the military, as well as the Myanmar Red Cross Society and local civil society organizations, with support from the UN and international organizations, are responding to the floods in different parts of the country, carrying out rescue operations and providing food, water, blankets, medical and other basic necessities to those affected.
Against that background, vulnerable children in Myanmar, UNICEF says, face a “double catastrophe” as floods add to the hardships of poverty, violence and conflict. UNICEF is working closely with other UN agencies is working closely with the Myanmar authorities, dispatching assessment teams to affected areas to identify the priority needs of children and families in terms of water and sanitation, health care, and nutrition. “UNICEF has already supported the distribution of water purification tablets and hygiene kits to the affected areas,” Ms. Bahuguna said. “We are working…to get emergency messages out to local communities through radio, to tell people how to prevent water borne diseases.” –UN News WSJ
Nine swept away by flash flood in China; 8 bodies recovered
August 2015 – BEIJING (AP) — A flash flood has struck a scenic area outside the city of Xi’an in central China, sweeping away nine Chinese tourists, state media reported Tuesday. Eight bodies have been recovered. The flood struck Xiaoyuhecun Valley on Monday afternoon amid the heaviest rains recorded in the area in 30 years, the reports said. A team of about 200 police officers, firefighters and paramilitary troops searched the area overnight, recovering eight bodies by Tuesday morning, the Xinhua News Agency said.
A former imperial Chinese capital, Xi’an lies in a greenbelt along the ancient Silk Road surrounded by the mountainous, mostly arid, province of Shaanxi. Many Chinese scenic sites suffer from chronic mismanagement, poor crowd control and other safety issues. Emergency services in Xi’an either did not answer calls or said they had no information about missing people or an investigation into the incident. –Big Story
Tremors expected to ease after Queensland region shaken by eight earthquakes
August 2015 – QUEENSLAND – The area off the Cooloola Coast hit by multiple earthquakes since last Thursday has the highest level of seismic activity in Queensland but is still relatively inactive by world standards, a senior seismologist has said. Borumba Dam has been given a clean bill of health following the shakes. Geoscience Australia senior duty seismologist Dan Jaksa said eight earthquakes had been detected in Queensland since Thursday. Three of the quakes, which occurred about 120km east of Fraser Island, registered magnitude 5 or above. “Magnitude 5 is the strength of an atomic bomb test,” Mr. Jaksa told the ABC at the weekend. “Magnitude 5.7 is about 15 times bigger than a magnitude 5, so that’s 15 atomic blasts of energy.” An hour after Saturday’s magnitude 5.7 event, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck in the same spot north-east of Rainbow Beach.
Seqwater said yesterday although Borumba Dam was designed to easily withstand earthquakes much greater than magnitude 5.3, Thursday’s quake was considered large enough to undertake dam safety inspections at every Seqwater dam in the region. No damage was found but regular check will continue. Since Thursday there have been five more quakes between magnitude 2.8 and 3.9. Whether or not there will be more is impossible to predict but experts expect the aftershocks to ease off now. Mr. Jaksa said Geoscience Australia received more than 3000 reports in response to the three magnitude 5 events. “There are 400 or 500 earthquakes a year (in Australia), but they’re not near people or they’re in the (ocean),” he told the ABC. “Not all of them generate tsunamis and not all of them are near … but we analyze all of them and all the little ones too.”
Mr. Jaksa said Australia had seen a number of events where large earthquakes had happened in quick succession, the most famous being in Tennant Creek in 1988, when three earthquakes higher than magnitude-6 occurred within two hours. Seismologist Mike Turnbull confirmed that the magnitude 5.7 earthquake at 1.38pm on Saturday was an aftershock. “It’s happening 10km under the ground and if you get the rock breaking in a certain direction it will throw energy in that direction,” he said. He expects the aftershocks to ease off now. –Gympie Times
Plagues of locusts darken skies, threaten crops in Southern Russia
August 4, 2015
August 2015 – RUSSIA – Plagues of locusts are swarming large areas of southern Russia, threatening thousands of acres of crops and in some places darkening the skies. A video shot by a local man in Achikulak, a village in the Stavropol region, shows thousands of the bugs swarming towards a church. Other videos, screened by local TV channels, showed clouds of locusts flying overhead. “It was very frightening,” Lubov Timus, a local woman who lives in Achikulak, told ABC News. “Some were as big as your finger! They came like a clouds.”
The waves of locusts began around July 20, according to Stavropol’s regional agricultural ministry. Vasilii Yegorov, a deputy agricultural minister, told ABC News that locusts appear in the region every year but normally they are able to exterminate them before they hatch. This year though, Yegorov said, locusts had migrated from neighboring Russian regions, meaning authorities were unable to halt them easily, threatening what is one of Russia’s major farming areas.
Swarms have been reported across many other southern regions, stretching from Chechnya to the Astrakhan province on the Caspian Sea. Because of the locusts, a state of emergency has been declared in three regions near Stavropol, according to local media. In Stavropol alone, efforts to kill the insects have stretched across more than 350 miles, according to officials. Yegorov said Stavropol authorities currently had the infestation under control and were spraying pesticide every day. –ABC News

August 2015 – OREGON – Freakishly hot, dry weather in the Pacific Northwest is killing millions of fish in the overheated waters of the region’s rivers and streams. “We’ve lost about 1.5 million juvenile fish this year due to drought conditions at our hatcheries,” Ron Warren of Washington State’s Department of Fish and Wildlife said in a statement. “This is unlike anything we’ve seen for some time.” Sockeye salmon losses in the Columbia River due to the heat are in the hundreds of thousands, said Jeff Fryer, senior fishery scientist with the river’s Inter-Tribal Fish Commission. The fish were returning from the ocean to spawn when the “unprecedented” warm water killed them, he said. Water temperatures in the Columbia River — part of which runs along the border of Oregon and Washington — reached the low 70s shortly after July 4, something that doesn’t usually happen until August, if at all, Fryer said.
High temperatures — coupled with the low water levels — can be lethal to fish, according to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. With no end to the drought in sight, there could be additional fish die-offs, said Rod French, a fish biologist with the department. Dead and distressed sockeye salmon found earlier this month in the Deschutes River in Oregon likely came from the Columbia River and were bound for other locations before they swam into the Deschutes in search of cooler water, the department said. Early pathology results suggest they died from columnaris, a bacterial infection typically associated with high water temperatures and/or low levels of dissolved oxygen.
In Idaho, “it’s a tough year for all (migrating) fish, including sockeye,” Mike Peterson, Idaho Fish and Game’s senior sockeye research biologist, said in a statement. Recreational fishermen in the region are also feeling the heat: Warm stream temperatures due to low flows and hot weather cause fish trauma, disease, and deaths, which has prompted the closing of streams to all fishing along the Washington Cascades, Richard Heim of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration wrote in this week’s U.S. Drought Monitor report. “When streams get too warm, fish are stressed and as a result the fishing goes downhill fast,” Rick Hargrave, information and education division administrator at the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, said in a statement. “Fish stop biting or retreat to deeper, cooler water where they are harder to catch.” July will likely be one of Seattle’s hottest single months on record, the National Weather Service reported.
On Friday, the city hit 90 degrees for the 11th time this summer. That’s an all-time record for normally mild Seattle. The current heat wave is expected to last into early next week. Meanwhile, 100% of Washington and Oregon are now in a drought at the same time, something that hasn’t happened since 2001. The trouble for the fish actually began months ago, when a lack of snowpack from an unusually warm winter resulted in drought conditions throughout much of the Pacific Northwest. Typically, a decent snowpack slowly provides water to rivers and streams, helping to sustain fish through the drier summer months, according to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. But, with little or no snowpack, flows in many rivers have dropped significantly and water temperatures have increased — deadly conditions for fish. –USA Today
